Juicing Your Travel Budget with Cash Back Portals

Don’t leave money on the table when you book travel online.  You can often get cashback on any online bookings if you first go through a cash-back portal.  All it takes is one extra step.

Say that you were getting ready to search for and book a hotel on Booking.com.  If you have an account at TopCashBack, you can get 6% cash back on your booking.  You just click the red Get Cashback button, and it takes you to the Booking.com website.  From there it is business as usual.  The portal tracks your purchase, and the cash back goes into your account after you complete your stay.

Perhaps you don’t want to use a 3rd party site.  You want to book directly with the hotel so that you get loyalty points, or you want to take advantage of a special program that they offer.  You can do that too!  Below you’ll see how you can book rooms at a Holiday Inn using the Ebates portal to earn 4.5% cash back.

Perhaps you’d rather stay at a Hilton?  Below is how you would get cashback via the portal Mr. Rebates to earn 3% cash back.

To determine which of the portals is paying the highest cash back, go to this handy website– cashbackmonitor.com.  You enter the provider that you want to use in the search bar, and it will show you what each of the portals is paying.  In the screenshot below, I entered “Expedia” into the search bar, and it showed me this:

In order to use the portals you have to first sign up for an account.  This takes about 5 minutes.  You also need to make sure that your click-throughs will register with the portal.  I accomplish this by going to private browsing before I sign in to the cash-back portal.  If there are continued problems, clear cookies before logging in.

Lest you think that this is nickle-and-dime stuff, let me show you my account at TopCashBack.  I’ve earned almost $1000 in cash back from them.  If you use the portals consistently, it adds up over time.

The ones that I’ve used successfully are TopCashBack, Ebates, and Mr. Rebates.  I tried BigCrumbs, but they never paid me on an outstanding ticket, and I could not get customer service to help me.

  1. Yes, let the cash roll in from the referral link! Oops, forgot I don’t have one. Most of my business with TopCashBack was from the purchase of AMEX gift cards. Now that the highest denomination that will pay cash back is $200, I’m not using them as much. Still, if I am buying something on line, I do check the cash back portals first.
